Yesterday I also was able to meet with our current NEHS members for the first time this school year. We discussed the roles and responsibilities of being a member, how our meetings would work this year, and what to do to prepare for our next meeting. I will work on a summary letter to parents with all of this information to go home with students by the end of this week. If you have any questions or concerns about your NEHS student feel free to call or email me any time :)
Another busy week at PWE is underway! Today I met with Mrs. Osborn's class for the first time! We had a great lesson on friendship and brainstormed ideas of what good friendship behavior looked like. We read the story, Heartprints and created our own Heartprints Poster for their classroom to remind them of our ideas! It was a very busy week at PWE! I hope you were able to catch all the fun! The Support Staff at PWE was happy to be on hand to meet and greet the parents and students at Open House this past Tuesday! My colleagues Jennifer Colley, School Social Worker,Nina Galvan, School Psychologist and I would like to thank everyone who stopped by to talk with us! This was also the week I FINALLY got to meet all our new KINDERGARTEN friends! And I have to say, they are a smart bunch of kiddos! It was such a pleasure meeting them, explaining my role at our school to them, and trying to remember all of their names! I look forward to a year of getting to know them better and learning a lot in my classroom with them! Friday was our first college explosion day of the year...and we had a LOT of students and staff participate! It was a great thing to see. Mrs. Tooman and I were trying to squeeze out Mrs. Mack's Carolina Tarheel, with our ECU PIrate Nation Pride at Bus Duty! I told you it was a busy week! One more thing rounded out the fun! The first AVID dance for our 4th and 5th graders took place after school Friday afternoon and I have to say those students can dance...and quite a few of the teachers too!
Our staff have been working hard to begin incorporating the Habits of Mind into our school! Ask your children about which habits they have learned about. I love the quote for persistence...
I was so excited to see my 1st and 2nd grade friends for the first time this week! After introductions, going over our basic classroom rules, and talking about my job here at Parkwood, we had a fun lesson (see below!). This year our second grade students will be doing a series of lessons about Froggy and his Friends. Each month we will have a different story/puppet show in which Froggy and different friends will learn a very important life lesson. Every month the life lesson will be different. This month Froggy learned the importance of doing his best in school. Froggy's friend, Rachel the rabbit helped him learn this lesson. If you have a 2nd grade student, ask them if they can tell you the 5 Rules for Doing Your Best from our story! First grade is an exciting time, filled with new firsts every day! During our FIRST classroom guidance lesson this year we read Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell's book 'My Brave Year of Firsts' and discussed all the exciting things that happened to Frankie in the story. We talked about the feelings that we have when new things happen and the important lessons we often learn along the way...Students brainstormed something they have done for the FIRST time since starting FIRST grade and made their own 'page from the book' to take home and show their parents of their special 'FIRST!' We at Parkwood Elementary School are so excited to announce that we will be partnering with the United Way to launch the CHEW program at our school this fall! More details coming very soon, but it was an exciting day at PWE! Thanks to Craig Wagner and April Tate for meeting with us today and helping us get our program started! For more information about the CHEW program you can visit http://www.uwonslow.org/CHEW
Introductory Guidance Lessons are under way! I have been happy to meet so many wonderful new students that are excited to be here at Parkwood and of course all of our amazing returning friends! This year I plan to update my blog with information and pictures of our monthly guidance lessons so that students, staff, and parents can see what is going on inside of my classroom! In addition, I will continue to update my blog with other news about the school counseling program and other activities and programs I help coordinate here at our school! The first month is always about introducing myself and my job. It is very important to me for the students to understand what my role at Parkwood is and how I can help them here at school. We spend a good time discussing this and the classroom rules and expectations on their first visit...but we always have time for a short fun lesson too! See the pics and summaries below for what 5th, 4th, and 3rd grades have done so far! (Mrs. Hensley and Ms. Moncrieffe enjoying the 5th grade game too!) This is one of my favorite lessons I have ever done as an introduction to the role of a school counselor! I found it on exploringschoolcounseling.blogspot.com back in September of 2014 and I have done it with my fifth grade classes ever since. As a class we make 'Counselor Catchers' and Students Play a game asking each other questions related to my job and topics that we cover in guidance. My fourth grade introductory activity is called 'Scribbles'. It is a modified version of a lesson I got a the North Carolina School Counselor's Conference years ago. It is a lesson that creates a conversation about problem solving, over coming difficult situations, believing in yourself, and never giving up! It is one of my favorites too...and usually is with the students too! This is one from the 'Dedmond Hall of Fame'! |
